The term “latino” was initially used to describe people from the region of Latium in ancient Rome, where the Latin language originated. In the 19th century, Amerique Latine” emerged in French to distinguish areas of the Americas colonized by Romance-speaking peoples (French, Spanish, Portuguese) from those colonized by Anglo-Saxon peoples. The term “Latinoamericano” (Latin America) gained popularity in Spanish as a way to describe people from the Americas colonized by Romance-speaking European nations. “Latino” was then shortened from “Latinoamericana” and used as a demotion (a term used to describe a person’s ethnic or national identity. In the 1970’s, the term “Latino” started appearing in books and personal communications, gaining wider recognition as a way to identify those with a shared heritage and cultural connection to Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. While “Hispanic is often used interchangeably with “Latino,” there are key differences. “Hispanic” refers to people who speak Spanish, while “Latino” is more geographically focused, encompassing Latin America and its diverse cultures.
Race, culture, ethnicity, and nationality, are all different from each other and have different meaning. Researchers say that race is a “social construct,” meaning that we see ourselves different from each other from our outside appearances, but biologically there is no difference in humans. Today’s society, however, sees a geographical racial distinction with three main racial groups of people. The White race, the Black race, and the Asian race. Ethnicity and Culture are related but with distinct concepts. Ethnicity refers to a group of people who share common heritage, history, and often a sense of belonging, while culture encompasses the shared beliefs, values, practices, and traditions of a group. Nationality refers to a legal affiliation with a country or nation, such as citizenship.
Approximately thirty thousand years ago, Asians crossed over the Bering land bridge which connected Asia to the Americas during the last ice age. Once the ice melted, the bridge disappeared and the Asian populations then migrated throughout what is now, Alaska, Canada, the United States, Mexico, and down to all of Central America, and South America. These peoples formed distinct tribes, cultures, and nations, from each other, throughout thousands of years. In 1492, the first White European explorers arrived in the Americas, coming from Spain and Portugal. While colonizing the Americas, the White Europeans inter-mixed with the Indigenous peoples for hundreds of years, until today. Most all of the populations in all Latin American Countries have a majority racial makeup of White European and Amerindian, (Indigenous) ancestry. These mixed-race peoples are called Mestizos in Spanish. Let’s all celebrate Latino’s rich cultural and racial history and know that all Latinos and White Americans have more in common with each other than we realize. Let us unite together and embrace each other, with all of our similar and rich cultures, rich heritages, and rich history together. Let no one divide us.
