There has been talk by certain people on social media that Derek Chauvin should be pardoned. This is a ridiculous proposal. The argument is that he did not get a fair trial, that his knee was on George Floyd’s shoulder part of the time and not fully on his neck, that this was police procedure, and that he was on drugs and had a heart condition. First of all, why would this case be the one that you would lay your reputation on? What is the benefit to you that are suggesting such an idea, and what is the benefit to society? The medical examiner’s report stated his death was a homicide. We can’t see the condition of George Floyd’s heart, and we can’t know exactly how much drugs were in his system. What we do know is what we saw, and what we saw was George Floyd alive and breathing and then died while Derek Chauvin had his knee on his neck, and after he stated that he couldn’t breathe, regardless of if this term has been used before with other suspects. When a suspect is standing and in handcuffs, you must keep ahold of the suspect in case they attempt to run or if they start kicking. Here, we have George Floyd laying on the ground in handcuffs and not resisting. With four officers present, there was no need whatsoever to have a knee with all of one’s body weight on top of him. Any suggestion of giving a pardon to former police officer Derek Chauvin, is not only unnecessary and would turn race relations once again on its head, it’s absolutely ridiculous and stupid to even talk about it.
