I remember years ago, there was a push from a certain groups to allow a cross on federal land. These cases went through the courts and had different outcomes for each case. There is also a push from several states to allow the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public schools. The First Amendment addresses religion through two distinct clauses that together ensure complete religious freedom by creating a wll between church and state while protecting individual faith.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” The argument for, with regards to the Ten Commandments, are not purely religious, but rather a foundational legal and historical document central to American history. Many new laws require the commandments to be framed alongside other historical texts like the Declaration of Independence.
The argument against, argues that the mandates amount to government-coerced religious instruction and directly violate the First Amendment. It also creates friction to those who do not believe in religion, or have a belief in and practice a different religion.
I believe more importantly though, is that we take into consideration that one of the reasons some of these successes to have these religious symbols and texts allowed to be displayed, is that the majority of the country with regards to population numbers are of this faith and therefor have the votes to pass it through. We must be very careful, as once you open that door, you have now allowed and have given permission to those of a different religion to now ask for the same permission and approval. We have seen population numbers drastically change both in Europe and even in the United States, and it is just a matter of time before both the white population and the Christian majority, become instead the minority. With the lack of procreation, comes a lack of replacement. With a lack of replacement, comes a lack of votes. Since the majority rules in a democracy, the laws will change as the votes will change. “What’s good for the Goose, is good for the Gander,” will surely play itself out.
